Decadent Wood Deck Designs

Colby Coward Design and Ideas

wood decksThere’s no doubt that having a wood deck is a pleasure. But the truth is that while anyone can have a deck or a patio, not everyone will have a design that is truly unique. If you’re going to build a deck or are considering a backyard renovation, why not make it something spectacular? As long as you’re going to spend the money, you may as well get what you’ve been dreaming of.

Work With Your Yard

Often it is the existing contours, condition, or the amount of space in your yard that is blinding you to its full, deck-paradise potential. You may know what you want, and may be able to afford the project, but still have trouble visualizing the finished product. This is when out-of-the-box thinking comes in.

  • House on a hill. You want a deck on the back of the house but are afraid it won’t look right with a staircase. Your backyard slopes downward, and you’re afraid the staircase will appear cumbersome because of the height and distance it must span. Why not make a split-level deck that incorporates more than one staircase?  Splitting the difference will break up the monotony and create multiple spaces.
  • No grass. If you have trouble growing grass in the backyard, or just live in a desert region, why not turn the majority of the backyard into a multi-level wooden patio? It’s still perfectly usable space, so a little customizing can turn it into an outdoor haven. Landscape around your deck with complementary plants or trees.
  • Uphill slope. Work with it! Some of the coolest designs are the result of innovation.

Who Says A Deck Has To Be Square?

Anybody can have a square deck. Rectangles and square shapes are perfectly useful and acceptable, but maybe you are looking for something a little more dramatic. There are so many other shapes to choose from: triangles, octagons, circles, and so on. Shapes can be combined with tiers and levels as well. Remember, it’s wood. It can be cut and shaped to form any design you can imagine.

Stain It!

Regardless of what type of wood you decide upon, it can be stained or finished in just about any color you can name. If you use a quality stain, you’ll be pleased with the results. Or, you could just go with cedar, which always has the “wow” effect and needs no stain. If you want to retain the natural color of the wood, you can simply treat it with a water proof sealant to ensure longevity.

Having a wood deck that has a one-of-a-kind custom design is what will make your space unique. Don’t let yard space or shapes limit your vision. Surf the internet to see what others have already done. Chances are, you’ll fall in love with more than one idea. That just means you can combine them to create something uniquely you!
